History: I am a dog from the Out of the Cold Rescue Effort!
We recently were arrived back to rescue with over 400+ dogs and 20+ cats looking for a second chance after being surrendered to rescue. They are each going through their own individual journeys while in rescue- many needing extensive medical attention for orthopedic care, dentals, skin issues, etc. Other health concerns were goopy eyes, ear infections, mange, and in need of a good bath and grooming.
Pascal came to us with what appears to be an old injury to his pelvis, the right femur bone and the left hip. It is likely that he had been struck by a car at some point to cause this set of injuries. The right femur was never set appropriately, so this bone has an abnormal bend to it. It is not painful to him at this stage and is not likely to cause any issues down the line. The left hip had been badly damaged and the joint was basically damaged beyond repair. We performed an FHO (femoral head ostectomy) which removes the articulation between the femur and the pelvis. This procedure is done in dogs with irreversibly damaged hip joints to essentially remove the source of joint pain and arthritis. He also has several healed pelvic fractures. He has been recovering well from the FHO in his foster home, and with time will continue to gain strength in the left rear leg. He will likely always have a slightly abnormal gait due to the bent femur on the right side, but this is typically very well tolerated by most dogs and we expect that Pascal will not experience any long term issues from this.
A note from the foster: Hello, Pascal here! I am so excited to have my turn to search for my forever family. My foster mommy says I have been waiting very patiently.
I am part of the Out of the Cold Recuse. I arrived at the rescue at the young age of 10-months-old, in early November. The beginning of my life was not so happy. I came into the rescue under-weight and had several poorly healed breaks on my pelvis. I was emotionally broken. When my foster mommy first met me at the rescue, she thought I was an old senior dog. I was just so skinny, frail, and sad. Despite my condition, I would greet everyone with a little tail wag and literally lean on them for hugs and kisses.
My foster mommy says we won’t focus on my past; how, when where and why. We will look to my bright future; here, now, safe, and alive.
I have been doing amazing here in Wisconsin. I have gained my weight back at a healthy rate. I am sleeping in a warm comfy home. I am so lucky to have received great care from the Coco’s Vet team. I completed my FHO surgery the end of 2023, which will alleviate pain on the injured hip joints. I am a strong boy and have done well with my exercises and Laser Therapy to help me heal. My foster mommy says it is good practice for me to get in the car for my appointments. I was so scared to get in the car at first. Now I just need a little lift in, and I sit and enjoy the views out the window. When I leave the Coco’s Vet team, they give me lots of hugs, kisses and sometimes a cookie.
I celebrated my 1st birthday on 1/11/24 and I was so excited to share a cake cookie from Angels Pet Store. My foster mommy took a lot of pictures because she says I am so cute!
I get excited when I see my family in the morning or when they come home from work. I must walk over and give them a tail wag until I get a head scratch. It did not take me long at all to start playing at my foster home. I mean, I am just a huge puppy. I really like chewing on toys, catching the ball and playing fetch. I go on daily walks with my foster mommy, and I am gentle on a leash. Although I am a big boy and strong, so my foster mommy and I have worked with a trainer several times. We learned the proper way to work together so I won’t pull if I see something that catches my attention. I learned to sit and take a break on the walk. I walk nicely right past squirrels, ducks, and barking dogs. We visit public places and practice our walks and sitting in those environments. As much as I do love to play with other dogs, I do need slow introductions to make sure we are both ready to play or be near each other. My foster mommy says she is so proud of the progress I have made.
There are even a few cats here with me. My foster mommy tells me I am a good boy when I walk right by them and pay no attention. She does think I would chase them if they started running, but I redirect very well. I really have enjoyed playing with the foster puppies that have been here. My size has been much bigger than the puppies, but I have learned to lay down and not to play so too rough with the puppies. I will even let them take the toys right from my mouth or chew on it together. We do have a crabby little resident dog here. I would like to be his friend, but he doesn't seem interested. I have been here a while now and sometimes he forgets he is supposed to be grumpy at me.
My foster mommy says I have matured so much over the last months. I was very mouthy when playing with my family, but not anymore. My counter surfing almost never happens. Although if you turn your back on your sandwich, it may go missing.
The foster puppies have been adopted and I have really settled down. Nobody wants to roll around the floor and play chase jumping over the living room ottoman with me. My foster mommy said something like “ it’s been relaxing”.
On that note you can see I would also be a “RELAXING” only pet, as I just want to be where my family is spending time together. I will play with you or chill out. Basically, I would make a great tv or book buddy. I really like scratches and kisses on my big blocky head, and don’t forget the belly and chest rubs. I would do great with older kids. I am getting much better around the small children that visit me every week. I have been gentle, and I am not jumping all around like when I first arrived. I will outgrow and learn correct behavior with proper direction.
I am food motivated which is so helpful with training, but tricky with multiple pets. When it’s time to eat I go right into my room and sit patiently for my bowl of food. I am fed in the morning and evening. I am potty trained and have not had one potty accident in the house or my kennel. I kennel up nicely with a treat to get in and a treat when I am in.
I would love to sleep in bed with my family if they allow, but a doggie bed on the floor is great too! I can be known to be found napping on the couch in the afternoon.
This family life is fun, and I am so excited for more new adventures.
I am a GOOD BOY!
I will make you the best dog/friend. I may have had a rough start in life, but I have a heart of gold waiting to share with you!
Adoption Fee: $500 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsively more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
