Violet

Adoption Status: Accepting Adoption Interest

Gender: Female
Breed: Maltese
Age: Est DOB: 05/2016
Weight: 11 lbs
Dog Friendly: Yes
Cat Friendly: Reported to be
Kid Friendly: Unknown
House Trained: Doing great!

History: Violet is a 9-year-old spayed female Maltese. She has recently been diagnosed and has started treatment for Pituitary Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism, also known as Cushing’s Disease. Cushing’s Disease is a hormonal (metabolic) or glandular disease of the body that causes the adrenal glands in the abdomen to secrete excess amounts of cortisol which is the stress hormone we all have.  When the body undergoes stress of any type the adrenal glands secrete cortisol which then signals other hormones to respond and changes the body, as in the “fight, flight or freeze” reaction.  Having too much cortisol all the time, due to Cushing’s Disease, is not healthy or comfortable for the patient. It took several tests and an ultrasound all done at Coco’s Heart to diagnose the disease. It is important to make the correct diagnosis because the treatment can have side effects that are serious.  In Violet’s case, she likely has a mass on her pituitary gland (usually benign not malignant) sending too much signaling hormone to both of her adrenal glands. The medication Trilostane ( Vetoryl) was started on 12/09 which will begin to stop her adrenals from secreting the cortisol in extra amounts. We are monitoring her response to the medication closely along with her excellent foster people to make sure the dose is the correct one for Violet. There is a great deal more information for owners of dogs with Cushing’s Disease on this excellent resource available at,   https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951495

As a super senior dog, Violet can have more years of fun and love despite this disease.

A note from the foster: Violet is a sweet lady who has been through a lot and is learning to be trusting of her changing environment after being returned to rescue recently.  Sweet Vi has already been earning many cute nicknames, and is the softest little muppet you'll meet!  She absolutely loves a comfy bed, takes solace in being able to see her people and she shows no hesitation with my husband helping her for potty times or feeding.  She does very well with our 3 small resident dogs, though she does not interact or play with them we fully believe she's learning a lot from them.  She previously lived with cats, and reportedly did well with them. She's spent time with our extended family, including children, and did very well with visitors.  Though, she would likely thrive with older, or calm, kiddos.

Violet is very gentle in her movements, and hasn't made a peep since arriving, outside of some very cute yawns.  Violet does well on a routine potty schedule, and also uses potty pads well.  Violet sleeps well in her kennel at night, she loves to be in a bed during the daytime hours.  Violet is shy, and can be slow to come out of her shell.  She truly is a very easy companion, and we feel she would do best in a calm environment.  She's been exploring her home with us more over the past few months, and definitely loves treats, and also enjoys being brushed and pet.

Speaking of her love of treats, peanut butter is an easy go-to for her medication.  Violet does require some medical attention, but has been very easy to work around so far and isn't showing negative side effects to her meds.  She continues to be monitored by Coco's amazing vet team, below is the note from them on her:

Violet was found to have abnormal liver values and started on Denosyl. She will have an abdominal ultrasound performed on 12/8 to learn more about her condition.

Potential adopters have three options:

Choose not to move forward with adoption process.

FTA - foster until adoption is finalized (usually until we complete diagnostics and/or any corrective procedures. Note: decision making still done by rescue.

Adopt - Take over daily care & medical care. Note: decision making done by adopter.

Violet is a wonderful pup, we've really enjoyed having her in our home and would love nothing more than to see her flourish in a loving forever home.

Adoption Fee: $510 + tax

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
