History: Leif FKA Blue Skidoo is a handsome boy who was recently returned to rescue due to having anxiety when left alone. He has been settling back into his original foster home who cared for him diligently through his treatment of leptospirosis. He is a good boy who will thrive in a home who understands the heeler breed!
A Note from the Foster: Leif had a rough start to his life. During his neuter surgery when he was in rescue last year, it was discovered that he had a healed fracture and bullet fragments in his front leg from an old (pre-rescue) gunshot injury. And then, only a few weeks later, he ended up in intensive care and nearly died from an acute leptospirosis infection. After a month in quarantine, he received the all-clear and was able to come home.
A few weeks later, he was adopted by a family who already had another heeler. But, as heelers are known to do, Leif would get bored and he became very naughty while his family was at work. Unfortunately, that usually resulted in Leif chewing up his family's possessions. Their other dog would not tolerate seeing his brother in a kennel, and the family was worried that he would choke or ingest something dangerous. So they made the difficult decision to return Leif to rescue for his own safety.
Leif is actually an extremely easy-going guy. As heelers go, he is a fairly low-energy dog. However, the blessing and the curse is that he is extremely smart, and he needs exercise for his brain. He would do super well with a family who is willing to give him an outlet for his intelligence. I could see him doing very well in obedience or agility training. He is fairly overweight right now, so anything that gets him moving would be good for him!
Leif is fully kennel trained. He goes in very willingly and stays quiet, calm, and clean all night. He loves to be around his people. If you even think about petting him, he can somehow sense it and will immediately show his belly for rubs! While he’s been home with me, he hasn’t even so much as thought about chewing anything up that he shouldn’t. When he gets bored, he has been very good about seeking out an acceptable chew toy. He walks well on a leash (althought he loves to pee at least 20 times on a walk which can get a bit tedious lol). He doesn’t pay any attention to my cats. If anything, he is overly respectful of their boundaries. If they hiss, he keeps his distance. He loves to play with other dogs, but he accepts that our elderly resident dog doesn’t like to play. He hasn’t been around very small children, but nothing about this pup would lead me to believe there would be any problems. He loves my tween kids and their friends.
This dog is the full package: sweet, smart, intelligent, affectionate, and handsome. He is waiting for the right family to scoop him up so he can show everyone what a good boy he is!
Adoption Fee: $510 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
