History: We recently welcomed a group of dogs and puppies to rescue from one of our southern partners after they needed help from unfortunate situations varying from overcrowded shelters, facing euthanasia, found as strays, or simply being overlooked due to the color of their hair. They arrived to rescue all in good spirits and are ready to start their journeys in finding their forever homes!
A note from the foster: Bubbles is such a sweet dog. She took a bit to get used to a new home and all the dogs we have around here, but she warmed up very quickly. She was a bit shy when she first moved in and a little hesitant about the other dogs, but now she just feels like one of the family.
She started sleeping in a kennel when she first moved in and she did a great job (was very quiet and clean all night). Then one day Brian forgot to lock the kennel door and we came downstairs the next morning and she was hanging out with our lab. She was quiet all night and didn't make a mess, so from that day on, we've just allowed her to sleep on the main floor with our other dog. She has had some accidents in the house overnight when she has a loose stool, but Brian (he is a veterinarian) gave her some medication which helped. I'm not sure how she would do overnight if you were planning on keeping her in a kennel. We haven't put her in a kennel in months. She barks during the night once in a while (especially when she hears the neighbor dogs barking), but she quiets down when we tell her to and the barking doesn't last long. Most nights she doesn't make any noise.
Once one of us gets up (I get up early most days), we feed her and send her outside. She isn't a fast eater. She picks at it a bit and sometimes comes back to it later. After she goes outside, she often comes back in and sleeps a bit longer most of the time. I think she's just following the lead of our other dog. About 7 am she's usually getting more playful and starts chewing on bones and other toys we have for her. She does like to pick up one of our shoes occasionally, but she usually just drops it somewhere. We've had a lot of puppies and she is not nearly as destructive as the ones we've had in the past. If she's going to chew on something, she usually picks up a bone or toy from the massive pile of dog stuff we have around the house.
She has been extremely lucky to live next door to 2 dog lovers who have 4 dogs of their own (including Bubbles's brother that they adopted). Bubbles absolutely loves being at their house and spends a lot of days over there playing with her brother and the other dogs (especially when Brian is working). They have a huge fenced in pasture so we can put her over there and she's safe and happy. She is very used to having other dogs around to play with. I feel that if she doesn't have that, she might get bored more easily. She is used to being able to play with other dogs most of the time and having a lot of room to run. I'm not sure how she would react if she didn't have that. She's never had time to be bored around here.
She likes to hang out with my husband outside when he's working in the yard. She hangs out with our other dog outside also, lying in the sun, etc. Wherever the other dogs (our lab and the neighbors' dogs) are, that's where you'll find Bubbles. She does not wander off on her own. She sticks around the other dogs. After a day of playing with her brother and the other dogs and enjoying her life, she conks out on the couch and she is out for the night. And the next day she starts that all over again. She's lucky that she has our neighbors and that Brian and I are semi-retired so she has a lot of people around.
Her favorite things are being outside, hanging out with her dog friends, having lots of room to run, chasing her brother, being petted and told how great she is, chasing squirrels, and chewing on bones.
I'd say the one area of improvement (and this is really our fault) is she needs some training on basic commands. She knows how to sit. She likes to please people also. She does not seem to be motivated much by food or training treats though. She has not been leash trained, but I think if someone spent the time with her, she would eventually pick it up. She's a really big dog and it would be important to leash train her if she was going to be taken on walks. She would be able to pull people very easily. She's a strong, large, athletic dog.
I really feel that Bubs would need some specific things to be happy in a new home. She would need a lot of room and a lot of stimulation (at least that's what she's used to). She's also used to having other dogs around to play with and a lot of activity throughout the day. If we're not home, we drop her at the neighbors' house where she can play with their dogs (it's like doggie day care we don't pay for Emoji). I just wanted to let you know the kind of life she's been having here. I'm just not sure how she would do without all that stimulation. She's never had to deal with that.
Adoption Fee: $550 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsively more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
