Phillip

Adoption Status: Accepting Adoption Interest

Gender: Male
Breed: Chihuahua & Terrier Mix
Age: Est DOB: 01/2025
Dog Friendly: Yes- would love another dog in the home
Cat Friendly: Likely due to young age
Kid Friendly: Likely due to young age
House Trained: Doing great!

History: We recently welcomed a group of deserving dogs who needed help from overcrowded rural shelters in Oklahoma. They are settling into their foster homes and doing well as they start their journey in finding their forever home soon!

A Note from the Foster: Phillip the Chihuahua mix is in search of a forever home that is looking for a small dog with the perfect mix of adventure and cuddles. True to the Chihuahua breed, Phillip is: affectionate, playful, vocal, stubborn, curious, and a little shy of new people at first. But after a few minutes of sniffing, observation, and maybe a little deli meat, he is ready to sit in your lap. He also loves to get head scratches and belly rubs, and will repay you with kisses.

Phillip is very dog friendly and would thrive in a home with a friendly, playful dog buddy of any size. I can see a change in his confidence when he is with any of the dogs he’s met since being in his foster home-he becomes a bit more brave when he has another dog to shadow and seems to settle faster too when the resident dog is nearby for nap time. He loves to go for walks and is also a big fan of car rides, he would love it if his new family took him out on adventures even if just to a nearby park. Phillip is also fully potty trained! Phillip enjoys toys his size (especially if they squeak), bones and even the occasional treat! He will sometimes hide his treats though, there is a greenie hidden in this house somewhere!

What we are working on with Phillip is being comfortable in his crate and time away from his people. He loves being with his people so much that it can take him quite some time to settle in for the night or any break in his crate during the day. I don’t think shared walls would be the best situation in his adoptive home as he can be quite loud in protest. Even though I’m sure he would love to share the bed with us, we are resisting the urge for those snuggles so he can continue working on these skills. We have tried a few different things, some work and some don’t, and we’d be happy to share with his forever family so they can continue working with Phillip in this area. We are also working on leash skills with him so that he doesn’t pull or try to say hi to every dog we walk by, this is coming along nicely!

Phillip has met a couple kids aged 6 and under and did well with getting pets from them, but did get very nervous and overwhelmed when he was surrounded by that kind attention. I think he would do well with a family with older kids that can respect his space when he needs it and also don’t mind all of the sounds that come from that tiny body. Phillip is a sweet boy who is looking for a forever family that will continue working with him to make him a well-rounded pup, and who can provide lots of love and cuddles.

Adoption Fee: $750 + tax

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
