Padre

Adoption Status: Accepting Adoption Interest

Gender: Male
Breed: Mini Poodle
Age: Est DOB: 11/2021
Weight: 8.5 lbs
Dog Friendly: Yes
Cat Friendly: Yes
Kid Friendly: Unknown
House Trained: In Progress!

History: Padre is a super handsome boy who was recently welcomed to rescue and will warm your heart with his smile and happy personality. He has his paws crossed to find his forever home soon!

A Note from the Foster: Do you have a comfy lap, gentle touch, calm and patient demeanor. Do you enjoy a long car ride with a furry companion? Do you live in a quiet environment with a furry friend or two? Then Padre might be the dog for you! Bonus points if the furry friends like to cuddle other furry friends!

Meet Padre, “Paddy” to his foster mom. This adorable, small, and spunky poodle is looking to find a mature forever family to give him love and security. Padre spent his first few years of life in a commercial breeding facility making puppies. Now he is learning how to live in a home with all the new, different, and sometimes scary experiences that entails.

Padre’s sweet face, curly coat, and big dark eyes capture the admiration of everyone he meets. He is sweet and gives gentle boops to the people he meets. Padre is easily startled by movement and noises, but his bravery has increased tremendously since he first entered rescue and has started adjusting to home life. His instinct is to bolt, and he is amazingly fast! He is most nervous when on the ground with humans standing nearby. Extra care will be needed to keep him safe and secure and avoid him getting loose and lost. He is regaining his composure from being startled more quickly, and he is earning a little bit of courage with each exposure.

Padre seeks comfort from and would love to cuddle with his foster sister who is 8 times his size, as well as his foster brother who is more his size. They tolerate it for the most part but are not into it, so he would enjoy a home with other furry friends who enjoy a good nuzzling. He is also comfortable snuggling up with humans and has recently settled on the laps of several humans he didn’t know well. His foster home also has two cats, and he has navigated those relationships well. A home without shared walls would be best as he barks at times when startled.

Padre needs a home where he is treated with patience and gentle encouragement, and where small steps forward are celebrated as joyfully as the big accomplishments. He has started to take treats directly from his foster mom’s hand. He allows himself to be picked up or petted with a very slow and gentle approach. Kennel training has been put on the back burner for now as it seems to trigger extreme panic. When foster mom is away from home, he shares the safety and security of a pen with his foster brother.

Padre is walking well on a leash (two leashes actually – two points of contact for his safety), and outside he has started to relax enough to turn his focus away from the leash holder to explore the wonderful smells of his surroundings. He has not attempted stairs yet, but he has mastered the ramp at his foster home. House training is a work in progress. He does well on a schedule but is inclined to mark when he is nervous or when the smells nearby are just too overwhelming for his sensitive nose, so he wears a belly band at times indoors. Any negative response to accidents or other behaviors will likely set him backward, so positive reinforcement is the only way forward for this little guy.

Padre is ready for adoption and hoping to find a home where he will be cherished and encouraged to learn and grow and live a long and happy life.

Adoption Fee: $550 + tax

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
