Oscar

Adoption Status: Accepting Adoption Interest

Oscar is available as a foster to adopt option as he continues his veterinary care.

Gender: Male
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Age: DOB: 01/2024
Weight: 53 lbs
Dog Friendly: Yes
Cat Friendly: Unknown
Kid Friendly: Unknown
House Trained: Doing great!

History: We received a local plea to help a litter of teenage English Labs from an outdoor living situation. They are social kiddos who do really well with other dogs. They are learning basic obedience, manners, and how to live in the home however they are extremely smart dogs who are learning very quickly. They are each hoping to find forever homes of their very own soon!

Oscar has a degenerative problem with his retinas called Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) that will result in blindness over 1-2 years. Dogs typically adjust quite well to loss of vision; steps just need to be taken to prevent falls or injury

From the vet team- we suspect that Oscar has early retinal detachment. The retina is a like a thin film layer lining the back of the eye made up light-sensitive cells and other processing cells. These cells job is to make the light it receives into a picture the brain can understand. Retinal detachment means these cells are becoming detached from the back of the eye. We suspect Oscar is in the early stages of this. In clinic on his exam he did not show any vision loss yet.  Dogs with this will have their vison decrease and some of them can go blind if there is full detachment.

A Note from the Foster: Oscar has really blossomed these past few weeks! He is feeling so much better, looking healthier, and really coming out of his shell.

Oscar has been through so much the first year of his life being in the situation that he was in on top of not being bred responsibly, he has some vision impairment due to retinal deterioration that is likely genetic. But that does not slow him down one bit, he can currently see well for the most part but will bump his head into stuff if he is moving too fast and needs a little extra help finding the ball sometimes but over all he navigates and operates pretty normal. You would never know by meeting him that he couldn't see 100%. It is possible for his vision to decline with time, but as someone who currently owns a dog with this same condition- I know that he will be just fine and acclimate easily especially because if he does decline it would happen slowly over time and not be a fast change for him.

Oscar took a little bit of time to get used to his new life in rescue, I think it was a big change for him going from living outside to living inside. After a long period of adjustment for him he has really come a long way. He is finally enjoying the company of other dogs- he can still be a little pushy but I think that is his way of playing. He has been doing super well with potty training. He is kennel trained. He is walking a lot better on leash now. He has been to a few events and has done super well meeting everyone, dogs, kids, adults. Sometimes he can still get spooked with sudden unexpected movements or loud noises. That does not stop him form being a very happy boy. Most of the time he has full body wiggles. He gets the zoomies in the yard often and his most favorite thing ever are stuffies. He will carry them around in the house.

Oscar would be such a fantastic family dog and companion and I hope he finds his forever family soon!

Adoption Fee: $760 + tax

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
