The Retrievers volunteer lost dog search team has worked closely with others for many years to provide training focused on avoiding the loss of their new dogs. They have created a Lost Dog Prevention course called NeverLost U! They are now making this education available —at no cost—to anyone who needs it.
NeverLost U will help people create and manage a safe environment for their dogs, from the first ride home, through the first minutes, days, weeks and months at their new home, and further adjustments over the years. We’ll help you through a trip to the groomer, through the 4th of July holidays, or a trip to the lake. Understanding these basic principles will help you keep your dogs safe.

What to do if your adopted dog goes missing:
-Put out smelly food, blankets, crate, etc in the area lost and near home. These can help the dog recognize familiar scents and find their way back.
- Contact local animal controls, shelters, and animal hospitals.
-Contact non-emergency police line, county sheriff, and animal control in your area
-Submit form with the Retrievers: https://theretrievers.org/request-assistance/. They are experts and the sooner they get involved the better! There is another group called Lost K9 and they can be reached at 612-600-2647.
-Contact local neighbors to report any sightings. We recommend you do this via Next Door and any neighborhood and Community FB groups you are in, as well as just sharing in general on FB.
-Sightings are so important so going door to door with flyers and making lost dogs signs will help in your search. We usually do not start making signs until the dog is missing a full day, but going door to door in the area lost can start right away.
Coco's Heart can help spread the word on social media to help gain sightings and recruit volunteers. These posts will have the adopter or lost dog case managers information so sightings and offers to help will go directly to you/them and not through Coco's Heart.
