Lilac

Adoption Status: Pending

Gender: Female
Breed: Toy Poodle
Age: Est DOB: 05/2019
Weight: 9 lbs
Dog Friendly: Yes
Cat Friendly: Unknown
Kid Friendly: Older Kids Ideal
House Trained: Doing great!

History: Lilac is a beautiful and unique little gal who needed a second chance at a good life- a restart if you will. She is settling into her foster home and doing well. Lilac would thrive in a quieter and patient home and hopes to find her family soon!

A Note from the Foster: Meet Lilac! This sweet, timid, cheerful girl is happy to be rescued from a puppy mill where she spent her time taking care of litter after litter and no one taking care of her. She quickly adjusted to life in a foster home, learned the purpose of a leash and a harness, and how good a human touch can feel, especially those scratches behind the ears. Once she got comfortable around her foster family, Lilac focused on showing them her appreciation by fast little tail wags and snuggles. She is brave to approach them when it's time to go outside and hook up a leash, or when little cheese snacks are available. Lilac still is acting cautious around humans, but she is working so hard to erase her past and learn to trust.

Lilac has discovered the comforts of a soft doggie bed - what a difference with the cold kennel floor of her last 6 years! Her best time is to hang out in a soft doggie bed, in the proximity of her foster mom, giving a side eye to silly foster puppies. This looks funny because one of her eyes is brown, the other light blue, and the contrast makes the side eye expression comical. Those puppies have decided she might be their mom, and pull on her ears and annoy her, but she gently growls, puts them in their places, and then resumes following them around and even participating in repositioning doggie toys.

Lilac has a couple of talents to show off. One, she loves to amplify the sirens of ambulances racing to a hospital nearby. She listens to them go by and emits a howl in the right key (we think it's C Major). If asked to stop, she does stop right away, but with the air of the job of alerting humans well done. Recently, Lilac was invited to join her foster humans for a movie. She spent the first hour of the movie snoozing right by her foster mom's side, then heard a dog in the movie bark, woke up, barked back, and proceeded to watch the second hour of the movie with keen interest. We just love seeing all these milestones of a girl who has never lived in a house as part of a family. Lilac plays coy if the foster mom tries to pick her up, dances from joy but slightly out of reach, but then relaxes in her arms and enjoys all the pets and affection.

Lilac is working on her potty training. She potties outside, and will continue to do so with a regular schedule, so the accidents are getting fewer and fewer in the house. At night, she sleeps in a kennel next to her foster mom's bed. She is quiet all night and keeps the kennel clean. Lilac expressed interest in sleeping on top of the human bed, but we're letting her progress a bit more along the potty training continuum to do this. We are sure she will be happy to discover the soft comforter and snooze the night away. Lilac is usually bummed when her fosters leave her in a playpen and sometimes the playpen is found a few feet from its original location upon the fosters' arrival home. She will probably do better in a kennel if left home alone for a few hours, so that's something the fosters will experiment with. She mastered a full flight of stairs on her own, up and down. Due to the sheer number of fosters in her home, she has not yet been on an official leash walk, but we know she will follow well.

We know that Lilac will continue to blossom with patience and nurturing care and become a great companion to a single person or mature couple.  She lives with a 10 year old dog-savvy girl in her home and loves her, so she would accept older, respectful, patient kids. She thrives in a quiet environment without too many visitors and commotion, although she is curious about everything. She has not been around cats.

Adoption Fee: $550 + tax

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
