History: Lemon is a beautiful and unique girl who was transferred to rescue by one of our partnering organizations in Texas where she was surrendered due to her medical needs specifically in her eyes. She is on some daily eye medications and she has been doing well on them! She has experience and does well with young children but because she is SO food motivated, we recommend a home with older children :)
A note from the foster: When life gives you lemons… you pick the best one. 🍋
Allow us to present you with Lemon, a 5 year old Boston x Frenchie mix who spends her days in a serene state of napping, cuddling, and with the occasional exploration of the outdoors. Lemon’s philosophy is to take life slow and steady, enjoy the peaceful moments, and handle the chaotic ones in stride.
Let’s start with the sweet stuff:
🍋 Housetrained: Lemon has been around the block a time or two. She knows her business and where to do it - which isn’t on your floors.
🍋 Cuddle Extraordinaire: You have space on that couch? Good, Lemon is here to fill it.
🍋 Nap-aholic: Lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day… Lemon would like to challenge them on that. Napping is the luxury of life, and Lemon is nothing if not luxurious.
🍋 Trustworthy: Lemon is willing to sleep in her crate, but is trusted to be left out of it. Just don’t leave any food scraps around or she’ll be sure to clean up after you.
🍋 Sweet as Honey: Gentle and kind is the name of the game, and Lemon is an expert player. She has a calm demeanor and loves to cuddle up next to anybody.
🍋 Adaptable & Accepting: Lemon has gone from surviving on the streets of San Antonio TX, to living with a family with nine dogs, to being surrendered to one of our rescue partners, to now being fostered through Coco’s Heart. She adjusts quickly and accepts change well for a girl who has gone through so much. Lemon is happy to be with you, no matter where that is - in the car, on a walk, in a store, at a park, or on the couch. Home is where the heart is and her heart is with you 💛
Now for the tart stuff:
🍋 Lemon’s left eye has ruptured twice in previous years. This is not an issue for her currently, but is the reason for its appearance. The fleshy part you see is a graft that was placed to repair her cornea and prevent future damage. She does not require eye drops at this time and it is not bothersome to her. She can still see very well.
🍋 Lemon has EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency) which causes her pancreas to not function properly. Due to this, she needs to be on a special diet and given enzyme powder with each meal. Lemon doesn’t mind the enzymes and gobbles up her food happily. She will even excitedly perform a wiggly tap dance while you are preparing it. Lemon should not have any treats or food outside of her specific diet, as she cannot properly digest them.
🍋 To treat B12 deficiency caused by EPI, Lemon requires a Vitamin B12 injection once a month.
🍋 Lemon has lived with nine dogs previously and currently lives with two older dogs in her foster home, so she is not a stranger to other furry friends. However, she is a lady that appreciates her space. She will nip at other dogs that enter her personal bubble when she is not in the mood to make friends. She does well with low-energy, non-confrontational dogs that mind their own business.
Lemon’s unique needs do not take away from her Southern Belle charm. Do you have the perfect spot for Lemon to nap for the rest of her days? Apply to adopt her today!
Here is a breakdown of the estimated costs of Lemon’s medical needs:
Lemon is currently on 2 1/2 cups of Hill’s GI Biome dry food served with a large spoonful of the canned food for extra kcal per day. She receives 1 tsp of pancreatic enzymes with each meal. Her meals need to be soaked in warm water for 15 minutes to activate the enzymes before serving. Lemon also receives a Vitamin B12 injection once a month.
27.5 lb bag of Hill’s Science Diet GI Biome dry food: $131 - lasts for about 50 days when fed 2.5 cups per day.
Case of 12 cans of Hill’s GI Biome: $64 - lasts for about 12 weeks, 1 can per week depending on amount given as a topper for meals.
Pancreatic Enzymes: $158 for a 500 gram bag on EnzymeDiane.com - contains 178 tsp which will last 89 days if fed twice a day OR 59 days if fed three times a day. Bulk options are available for further cost savings.
Vitamin B12 Injection: Varies wildly between clinics, please consult your choice of clinic for pricing. Price could potentially be lower if owners are comfortable with performing the injections at home.
TOTAL ESTIMATED MONTHLY COST: $153.19 if fed twice a day + cost of B12 OR $180.27 if fed three times a day + cost of B12
Adoption Fee: $500 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsively more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
